    Ruben hunts with a compound bow and Ruger 10/22 rifle. He defends himself from attack with a hatchet or hunting knife. His three small game dogs are fitted with radio collars. He has a sizable collection of trapping and fishing equipment, gathered over years as a professional. In order to alert himself to walkers, he carries a baby monitor for the hard of hearing which vibrates at the sound of voices or growling. This is his most precious possession. Without it, despite his skills, he knows he will truly be beyond the reach of help.

    Ruben Day was born October 26, 1978 in Clarion County, Pennsylvania, the northern edge of Appalachia, to Deaf parents. After losing his hearing early in childhood, he fitted with cochlear implants before his seventh birthday. He has depended on both ASL and English to communicate for most of his life. By and large, his upbringing was happy and unremarkable. He grew up alongside two older brothers, who were taught to hunt and fish at an early age by their grandfather.

    Ruben excelled as a hunter. He worked for a short time as a trapper in the Yukon before going on to college to study ecology. After graduating, he earned an MFA in creative nonfiction and would write for Field and Stream, Wall Street Journal, the New Yorker and other periodicals. His first book offered a defense of hunting and made the case that hunters are obligated to be stewards of the land and protectors of their chosen prey species. Before the outbreak he published a total of four books:

    Crystal Peak Outlook is located deep in the backwoods of the Cohutta wilderness. The nearest town is Cisco, Georgia. The structure, suspended 60 feet off the ground, was Ruben's passion project before the end. It has a solar panel array and overlooks a spring for fresh water. The rooftop has a modest garden. Ruben has not left this area since near the beginning of the outbreak. There are several marked graves nearby. Of the group of fifteen friends and family he started with, he is the last man standing.
